I am Tapiwa Matsinde, a London-based author, publisher, and curator – passionate about design, creativity, culture, and branding. I am a graduate of the University for the Creative Arts, Surrey where I received a Masters of Arts with Distinction in Design Management focusing on Creative Enterprise.
I specialize in researching, promoting and writing about contemporary African design, bringing the work of talented designers, makers, and creatives from the continent and diaspora to the attention of diverse local and global audiences. I mainly do this through, Atelier Fifty-Five a platform I created to spotlight Africa’s design; and Shoko Press, an independent publisher of art books about contemporary African creativity.
My first book, Contemporary Design Africa, profiling over 50 designers and makers working on the African continent and beyond was published by Thames & Hudson in May 2015.
I also offer an advisory service for individuals and organizations, sharing my knowledge and insights into the contemporary African design industry, in addition, to curating related exhibitions. And, for creative entrepreneurs and brands, I advise on strategies to position their businesses for success in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
